Why see a counsellor?
People see a therapist or counsellor for many different reasons, especially when they feel like they need to talk to someone about how they feel in confidence and with the knowledge that the things that they say are private. Many things that we come up against in our lives can cause us to feel mentally drained or unstable and sometimes unresolved or unaddressed problems from your past can resurface as you get older. Studies have shown that mental health therapy can have a positive impact on your physical well-being and vice versa. Counselling can happen for a short time or it can be an ongoing process depending on your needs.
What does counselling cost?
I offer both set rates and a sliding fee rate that depend your income. I am happy to discuss rates with you in your first session or, if you feel like sending me an email, we can agree on a rate per session before you come in. I believe that everyone has a right to access good mental health resources and counselling. As there are many barriers to accessing good help, I resolve to do as much as I can to change that. If you do not have benefits through work or through a third party payer, we can discuss fee reductions. As a registered social worker, many insurance providers will cover my counselling services. I am an approved mental health provider through Medavie Blue Cross Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and ICBC.
How many sessions will i need? How long is a session?
The amount of sessions you have is up to you! After a few sessions, you might like to decide you need a break or that you need to stop and this is absolutely ok! Typically people come anywhere from once per week, to every other week, to once per month. Sometimes a person might like to have some sessions and then have a break to come back at a later date or have a session here and there when they feel like they need one. I am open to whatever your needs are and am happy to see you as much or as little as suits you.
Sessions are usually about an hour long and but if you feel like you might need a little longer in the beginning , I am happy to schedule extra time for us.
Do I have to come in person?
For many good reasons, some people feel uncomfortable physically coming into see a therapist. We are fortunate to live in a time when speaking to a therapist from the comfort of your home or from somewhere you feel most comfort is convenient and easy. I can provide sessions through online platforms or just a regular phone call. I and in person meeting is something you need to work up to, we can discuss what works best for you.
