Finding a counsellor who is a fit for you or your child can be a difficult and timely process. Here are some brief answers to some frequently asked questions about therapy.
Why see a counsellor?
People see a therapist or counsellor for may different reasons, especially when they feel like they need to talk to someone about how they feel in confidence and with the knowledge that the things they say are private. Many things that we come up against in our lives can cause us to feel mentally drained or unstable and sometimes unresolved or unaddressed problems from your past can resurface as you get older. Studies have shown that mental health therapy can have a positive impact on your physical well-being, and vice versa. Counselling can be done for a short time or it can be an ongoing process, depending on your needs.
What does counselling cost?
I offer both set rates and a sliding scale fee rate that will depend on your income. I am happy to discuss rates further with you in your first session or, if you want to email me, we can agree on a rate per session before your first appointment.
I believe that everyone has a right to access good mental health resources and counselling. As there are many barriers to accessing good help, I resolve to do as much as possible to accommodate your needs. If you are not eligible for employee or third-party counselling benefits, we can discuss fee reductions.
As a registered social worker, many insurance providers will cover the cost of my counselling services. I am an approved mental health provider with Medavie Blue Cross, First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and ICBC.
How many sessions will i need? how long is a session?
The amount of sessions you have will be up to you! After a few sessions, you might decide that you would like to take a break or that you need to stop. Typically, people come to sessions anywhere from once per week to every two weeks to once per month or as they need to. I am open to whatever your needs are and am happy to see you as much or as little as suits you.
Sessions are usually an hour long but can be booked for longer if needed.
Do i have to come in person?
I am always happy to see you in person, but for many good reasons, some people feel uncomfortable physically coming in to see a therapist in-person. We are fortunate to live in a time when speaking to a therapist from your home, or from somewhere you feel is most comfortable is a convenient option. I can provide sessions through secure online platforms or through secure phone call. If an in-person meeting is something you need to work up to, we can discuss what works best for you.
